Overview

Newsroom is a student run production that covers school-related content and activities for the public. Newsroom competes against 119 other school activities, however Newsroom is one of the few that is specifically for design students

Background

Unlike the other school activities, Newsroom does not have a booth during CCA fair. (where students look for school activities to sign up) Newsroom is solely for design students thus there is no need for it to be at the CCA fair. As such, students do not have much knowledge on what Newsroom is and what they do. Up till today, Newsroom recruits solely based on lecturer’s recommendations.

Approach

Identity - A CCA is not just a workshop to improve a unique skill, nor is it just a personal hobby or a ticket to get into a university. A CCA is an identity. “Oh he’s our school basketball player”, “That is the lead violin player in Strings Ensemble”, “She’s the president of the Business School Club”. A CCA is a dierent colored hat to wear. It is what dierentiate you from them. And everyone wants an identity, to be dierent. Nobody wants to be a plain Jane.

Expression + Creativity - The year ones are just beginning to learn and indulge themselves in design. They are immersing in the new world of creativity, aesthetics and ideation. They are taught new tools like adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as well as learning new skills like paper crafting and photography. With new knowledge comes the desire to put it to action. Given the opportunity, these students want to express their creativity and put themselves out there by producing works beyond the school assignments.

Validation - Deep within every designer’s heart, is the strong desire for validation. They want to be accepted, to be recognized and to be appreciated. They want clients to like their work or lecturers to praise their eorts or even their friends to be in awe of their crafts. Validation is the drug that release them from insecurity. A designer love to be told that they are great, who wouldn’t?
